A quick reference to the key beach tennis terms: golden point (the deciding point at deuce), the smash and lob (the main attacking and defensive shots), let and hindrance (point replays), foot fault, change of ends, and the match tie-break.
Beach Tennis Terms.
- Ace. a serve the receiver cannot return.
- Change of ends. teams swap sides after odd-numbered total games to keep conditions fair.
- Deuce. 40-40; in beach tennis decided by a single golden point.
- Foot fault. touching or crossing the baseline before striking the serve; loses the point. See serve rules.
- Golden point. the no-advantage deciding point played at deuce.
- Hindrance. a player is impeded during play; the point is replayed or awarded depending on intent.
- Let. a point that is replayed (e.g. certain service interruptions).
- Lob. a high shot over the net players, used to push an aggressive pair off the net.
- Match tie-break. a 10-point tie-break that replaces a full deciding set.
- No-ad. no-advantage scoring; deuce is settled by the golden point.
- Smash. the overhead finishing shot. see how to smash.
- Tie-break. decides a set at 6-6; serve follows ITF Rule 8b. see the tie-break.
- Volley. hitting the ball before it bounces. in beach tennis, every shot is a volley.
