RulesChanging Ends
When do teams switch sides, and why it matters on the beach.
In beach tennis, teams change ends after every odd number of total games played (after the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and so on) and at set intervals during the tie-break (commonly every 6 points in a 7-point breaker). The reason is fairness: it stops one team being stuck facing the sun or wind for too long.
When to Switch Sides.
- During a set: change ends after every odd total of games. after game 1, game 3, game 5, and so on.
- During the tie-break: change ends at the format’s set interval (commonly every 6 points in a 7-point tie-break, and every 6 points in a 10-point match tie-break).
- Between sets: ends also change as the format dictates.
On an open beach, sun glare and wind can swing a match, so regular end changes keep it even. Losing track of when to switch is one of the most common scoring mistakes. see the tie-break and the full rules.
